CGHA Annual Banquet
The CGHA Annual Banquet will be held this year on Friday, April 16th at Club Lentinas. We will be changing the format this year to make the evening a little less formal and more of an opportunity for the girls to celebrate their hockey season and have some fun. A dance will follow dinner and the awards. We will not be featuring a guest speaker this year. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
Your coach or team manager will be receiving tickets for the banquet in the near future.
A team of local girls found out Sunday it’s better to give than to receive. The Chatham Peewee ‘A’ Outlaws decided to forgo giving each other presents this year so they could provide Christmas for a less fortunate family. “I think it’s nice that we are donating to a needy family,” said 12-year-old Sydney Authier. “We don’t need the gifts, they do.”
She said it feels good to give to others and she’s proud of her team for supporting the effort. “They did a really good job . . . they all participated,” she said. Her mother Patty Authier, team trainer, said the girls, who are from all over Chatham-Kent, embraced the idea of helping a family have a happy holiday. “We chose a family in Chatham to support by buying presents and food,” she said, pointing out a table loaded with wrapped gifts and food. The family receiving the donations didn’t wish to be identified. Patty Authier said the team gave up the traditional secret Santa gift exchange without a complaint. They were excited to spend their money on children in need, she said. “They loved it,” she said. “They wanted to know more about the family, they were really interested.” She said the initiative helped the girls realize they can make a difference. “There are a lot more families out there that are needier than ours,” she said. During practices in December, the team collected non-perishable food to give the family along with the gifts. “We’re proud of them each and every game but we’re really proud of them at this time of year,” the team trainer said. Meredith Goldhawk, 12, said spending money on the family felt really good. “I want to make sure another family has a good Christmas,” she said. “We all have stuff and some kids don’t.” She noted it feels better to give then to receive — which is the true spirit of the season.
